“At Cross Purposes”

Bible Text: Mark 8:31-38 |

As we continue our walk with Jesus as Mark records his journey, we come to a certain transition in Jesus’ ministry. With the disciples beginning to see that He is the promised and hoped for Messiah from God, Jesus begins to tell them about the work and purpose of the Messiah. Hell literally breaks out against Jesus as His description of the Messiah’s work comes nowhere close to the disciple’s expectations of the Messiah’s work. As disturbing as the description of the Messiah’s purposes is what comes next: following this Messiah involves following Him to the cross. What does this say to the church today that is flirting with the notion of cheap grace?
